Romans 10:17 (NKJV)
So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.
When I was in high school, we had a massive snowstorm two weeks before Christmas break, resulting in four weeks off school! This seemed like a dream come true as a teenager, but I quickly realized that there wasn’t much to do with all the roads and businesses shut down.
I remember sitting in my bedroom and spotting my Bible on one particularly snowy night. Feeling guilty that I hadn’t been reading it much at all, I picked it up and crawled into bed. What I thought would be a quick peace offering for my shame turned out to nearly become an all-night reading marathon. I couldn’t put the Bible down! As I was reading, I kept highlighting these amazing passages that were speaking to my heart. Over that extended break, I read almost the entire New Testament. It changed me. To this day, I credit a big part of my faith foundation to that four-week experience. It paved the path for faith to flow through my life.
Faith comes to us as we hear the Word of God. The more we hear it, the more faith awakens within us. And there is a big difference between listening and hearing. Listening is simply the act of our ears picking up a signal. Hearing is when the signal transforms our heart. Listening is physical; hearing is spiritual. Many people listen to the Word of God, but only a few hear the Word of God. When we hear the Word of God, it revolutionizes our entire outlook on life. Preacher Charles H. Spurgeon said, “A Bible that’s falling apart usually belongs to someone who isn’t.” The Bible is more than just informational text; it’s transformational living.
Therefore it is vital that we immerse ourselves with God’s Word. The more we get into the Word of God, the more the Word of God gets into us. In fact, it is impossible to fully know God without knowing His Word. If we genuinely want great faith, it takes great commitment to His Word. We must commit to seeking Him with all our hearts. This means hearing His Word, not just listening to it.
Don’t say God has been silent when your Bible has been closed. God’s Word has everything you need for exactly what you’re going through. It will raise your faith to where it needs to be.
