We were created for community. In fact, community is what cultivates creativity. Even the Godhead 3-in1 Trinity shows us this principle. The Bible even shows us how we were created from community…
Genesis 1:26 (NIV)
Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”
Did you get that? God said, “Let US make mankind…” The word US points to the Godhead being present when man was created. There was community. The Father, God, is in community with, The Son, Jesus, and The Holy Spirit. And as they are one…they create. We were created for community to create. It is when we come together that incredible inspiration takes place. Throw like-minded people in a room and what you get is a blended mixture of creative juices.
Sadly, this is why so many people struggle with being creative in their job, business, family, church, ministry, and skills. They are flying solo and can only go so far until they are done. We weren’t designed to go solo. Trying to be creative Rambo and change the world by yourself is set up for disaster. You need to be in community with those who can band together for the cause.
Here are 3 questions I want you to think about…
1) Who is your community?
Who are the people you are joining together with in order to be more creative? Do you know who your team is? By team, I mean a group of people that are rallied behind the same cause and spurring one another on. If you are a business owner, who is in your mastermind group pushing you on? If you are a ministry leader, who is your team that you create with? If you are a parent, who is your like-minded parent friend(s) that you are working together with to be a better parent? As my mentor Dr. John C. Maxwell teaches, one is too small a number to achieve greatness. You have to be in community if you want to be your best.
2) How often do you commune with your community?
Having a community means little if you don’t commune together. If not careful you may go months and even years without spending time together. You can’t sharpen each other if you don’t take time to get around one another. It is important that you consistently schedule time to get around those who you can create with. Don’t get so busy that you forget to commune with those you should be communing with. Make it a priority to get together with those who you can create with.
3) What are you creating?
Having a community is great, communing with them is greater, and truly creating with them is the greatest. Are you being intentional about being productive with your community? Don’t just get together with folks and shoot the breeze…be strategic and gets stuff done. Make sure you are helping each other and diving into opportunities to sharpen one another. Get together with a game plan so you stay productive with your creativity. Come prepared to tackle issues that are important. I don’t mean to be mean, but talking about the weather, last night’s game, and your neighbor’s yard is pointless unless you are either a meteorologist, coach, or landscaper. My point is, don’t waste time when you are together talking about frivolous subjects when there are too many vital subjects you could be talking about.
