We have all experienced creative constipation…nothing seems to come out. We just can’t produce and get things done. The ideas have stopped flowing. The brainstorming has gone to clear skies. The well is empty. Sometimes it happens in the worst of times. Right when we need to come up with the next best idea and bam…nothing. So what do we do?
1. Get Around Something That Inspires You
I understand you can’t always do this, especially if you need to produce in the moment, but assuming you have an opportunity to take a break…TAKE IT! Go to the thing that inspires you. You have to know your creative flow (you need to read that link, it will help you). When you know where to go, when to go, and what to do when you get there it helps you get inspired. Figure out what inspires you and get around it.
2. Research, Research, Research
If you are trying to come up with creative ideas GOOGLE whatever it is you are trying to come up with. I do this FOR EVERYTHING. If I’m planning a date night with my wife…guess what…I go to google and the ideas start sparking. If I am planning an event to put on…I search what other people have done. When I am thinking of business opportunities…I search what other people are doing and I always get a spark of creativity. It is one idea, that leads to another, that leads to another, that leads to another, that gives me a good idea. Then I take that good idea and marinate it until it becomes a great idea.
3. Talk Through It With Someone
Collaboration breeds creativity. Have your go to people that you know will help spark some ideas. If you don’t have a creative team (formal or informal…meaning a group of friends or someone) then CREATE ONE! You have to have people around you that are creative so you can spark each other. Sometimes all you need is someone who can be a catalyst for your ideas to get flowing again. Don’t be afraid to seek out other people to help you be more creative. Creative people love to help creative people.
