Reverend E. Paul Hovey said, “A blind man’s world is bounded by the limits of his touch; an ignorant man’s world by the limits of his knowledge: a great man’s world by the limits of his vision.”
Proverbs 29:18a (KJV)
Where there is no vision, the people perish…
Vision is only as powerful as its effect on people. Vision will push someone to work with a stronger sense of dedication and purpose. It is difficult to live with intentionality without a vision for the future.
Christopher Wren, one of the greatest architects in London’s history, was commissioned to build Saint Paul’s Cathedral after the great fire of 1666. After observing three bricklayers working on a scaffold, Wren asked each man, “What are you doing?”
The first man, crouched low to the ground, replied, “Just making a living.”
Standing beside the first, the second man said, “Just building a wall.”
The third man, high on a ladder, working with evident dedication and determination, said, “Creating a cathedral for the Almighty.”
Indeed, the last man knew what his work was truly about; his vision was strong and clear. A clear vision is the first step to creating a detailed action plan. The better you understand what you are working towards, the easier it is to develop a route to get there. Most people spend more time planning their grocery lists than they do planning their lives. We have an innate desire for greatness, but we first need the vision to achieve it. Then, we need to develop a game plan to squeeze every ounce of potential from ourselves.
Proverbs 21:5 (ESV)
The plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance, but everyone who is hasty comes only to poverty.
The Holy Spirit will prompt you to establish the right goals for your life. He may not lay out the whole plan ahead of time (that’s where faith comes into play), but He does lead us, step by step, to the finish line.
Spend some time in prayer, asking God to show you what goals you should be working on and write them down.
