Many times we are so busy with work that by the time we get home to be with our family we are spent. They end up getting the left-overs of our day, the crumbs of our energy and time. I see men do this all the time. They work a hard day leading others and providing services but when they get home there in no leadership and no providing for their own families needs. They come home, plop on the couch, ask what’s for dinner, and watch TV until they slip into a media coma. Instead of being the husband, the father they need to be, they are mentally absent. They give their best to their work and scrap the rest to their family. Wether you are the man or the woman we have a responsibility to bring Christ into the center of our living room and be the example to each other. We are called to lead our families in the way God is directing. Too many times what happens in the home leaves Jesus at the door never invited in to have His way.
Revelation 3:20
Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.
I think Jesus is knocking at the door of many homes waiting to be welcomed in. Instead we are so busy with fixing the house, making dinner, running errands and taking the kids to the fourteen thousand extracurricular events they are involved in that there is no one home. We need to have precious time in our homes with each other. Our homes should be a place of peace and a place that fosters the dreams of everyone living in it. Our homes should be a shelter from the storms of life, yet they are where the storms are created sometimes. We have all heard the verse…
Joshua 24:15
“As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.”
Are we serving the Lord in our homes? Are we bringing Jesus into the living room to hang out with us? Or is the living room ALL about the TV? We have got to live serving one another with love, patience and joy. We have got to bring God’s word through our lifestyle in the home. Pray with your spouse, pray with your kids, talk about the things of God through teachable moments. Be the leader of your home, don’t let Hollywood or Nickelodeon lead it. Set up times and opportunities in your home for Godly things to happen. Family is the most important thing we have outside of our personal relationship with God.
Deuteronomy 6:5-9
Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.
