It is critical that we define Who this God is that we worship in Christianity. In a world and culture of many “gods” it is important that we are specific when talking about, God Almighty, the Creator of the Universe. There must not be any confusion about the “Who” we are referring to. We often assume people know which God we are talking about when we use the term “God,” but there are over three thousand “gods” mentioned throughout history. These “gods” have been and are still being worshiped in various cultures around the world. Three thousand is a conservative number when taking into account that anything can become a “god” in our life. The Bible is very clear and precise about Who we are called to worship.
Exodus 20:3
You shall have no other gods before me.
This was an important commandment given by God. At the time the Ten Commandments were given to the Children of Israel, they were guilty of making idols and “gods” to worship. Instead of giving their worship to the true God, they were worshiping false gods. False worship became so popular over the course of Israel’s history that it took a man named Hezekiah to stand up and revolutionize Jerusalem.
2 Kings 18:1-8
In the third year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel, Hezekiah son of Ahaz king of Judah began to reign. He was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem twenty-nine years. His mother’s name was Abijah daughter of Zechariah. He did what was right in the eyes of the LORD, just as his father David had done. He removed the high places, smashed the sacred stones and cut down the Asherah poles. He broke into pieces the bronze snake Moses had made, for up to that time the Israelites had been burning incense to it (It was called Nehushtan). Hezekiah trusted in the LORD, the God of Israel. There was no one like him among all the kings of Judah, either before him or after him. He held fast to the LORD and did not stop following him; he kept the commands the LORD had given Moses. And the LORD was with him; he was successful in whatever he undertook. He rebelled against the king of Assyria and did not serve him. From watchtower to fortified city, he defeated the Philistines, as far as Gaza and its territory.
King Hezekiah cleansed the city of idols and restored true worship back to God. He was a true Worship Revolutionist. His father, King David, had a heart after God and Hezekiah grew up to carry that same passion for God.
Did you notice that the Bible says Hezekiah “Trusted in the Lord, the God of Israel?” This describes Who God truly is. All throughout scripture God is described by more than just the title, God. He is…THE God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, THE God of Israel, God Almighty, Savior God, God Over All, King of Kings, and many more titles. He is more than just a god, He is The God.
Today in our culture we may not make sacred stones and bronze snakes to worship, but we sometimes let “gods” or “idols” steal our worship away from the true God. We can idolize people, feelings, money, our image, or anything that becomes the center of our attention. We have a call from God to be like Hezekiah and help restore true worship back to the true God. We are called to be “idol smashers” in our own life and for the world. Jesus is the only true Son of God. He is the only way to Heaven.
John 14:6
Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the father but through me.”
Though our culture pressures us to be open-minded and believe that all religions lead to the same destination, we must take a stand for the truth of what the Word of God says. Hezekiah held fast to THE Lord and did not stop following Him. So we must hold fast to the truth of the One true Creator God. As time moves on and culture “accepts” all religions as equal, Worship Revolutionists must become counterculture and must fight for truth.
Not too long ago my wife and I saw a now popular bumper sticker that said, “Co-exist” with the letters spelling it being symbols of various religions. It is true that we can co-exist with other religions, for we live in a country where we have the freedom of religion. But that does not mean that we have to co-believe that all religions lead to the same destination. There is a big difference between co-existing and co-believing. Now is the time to be very clear about Who we worship.
