There is a lot of money and study put into the research of the human heart. We have made some amazing discoveries with technology revealing the functions of the physical heart. But the most powerful and revealing study that we could ever do would be the study on the condition of our spiritual heart. The Bible has a lot to say about our heart. It uses the symbolism of the heart as being the very center of who we are. Just like our physical heart is the hub of our life source, so our spiritual heart is the hub of our spiritual life source. Our physical life is a product of what happens in our spiritual heart.
Psalms 139:23,24
Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
In this Psalm, King David asked God to reveal to him the condition of his heart. David was constantly seeking to know if his heart was reflecting God’s image. He willingly exposed the condition of his heart by being transparent with God. He wasn’t afraid of doing “heart surgery” if needed. Asking God to search us, like David did, humbly points our spiritual compass towards Him. It gets our heart to where it needs to be. It lines us up with who God has called us to be. Understand that worship is not just about what we do, it is about who we are; a condition of our heart. Therefore we measure our life by God’s standards, not our own. Jesus said…
John 4:23
“Yet a time is coming and has now come when true worshipers will worship the Lord in Spirit and in truth for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.”
God is actively seeking those on the earth that are reflecting His glory. He is not looking for the wisest person with the best reputation. He is not looking for the most successful person on earth. He is looking for Himself to be glorified in you.
Have you ever noticed how people that spend a lot of time together begin to act like one another? Married couples even start to look like each other, picking up on their spouse’s mannerisms and expressions over the years. My wife, Erin, and I have made “couple comparing” into a game. We try to figure out which couples have morphed into each other after years of being married. Now that we have been married for many years people are starting to say that we look alike (which is good for me, bad for her).
God is looking for a people who look like Him through their attitudes and actions. Worshipers who are transforming into His image day by day. Did you know God is searching your heart right now? Even as you are reading this book, God is searching your heart. Does He see His characteristics in you?
Notice, Jesus did not say He was looking for worship in John 4:23, He said He was looking for worshipers. Now that was a huge statement! God does not need worship as though He is lacking something. He has no need, He is God. However, He seeks worshipers because worshipers have a relationship with Him. Worship is something we give to God, but being a worshiper is something that we are for God. It is a condition of our heart, and the condition of our heart shows us who we really are. In the human body the heart is more important than the hand. This is because without the hand the heart can go on, but without the heart the hand is dead. God is not looking for hands (worship) as much as He is looking for hearts (worshipers). He is first concerned about the condition of our heart.
