It is funny how we marvel at nature and the galaxy, yet miss the greatest creation of all, ourselves! We tend to think that we are nothing among this great universe, yet we are the prize creation of God. It is ironic that we wrestle with thinking that we are of little value, when we were created by the Greatest Artist of all, God.
Psalm 8:3-9
When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have set in place, what is man that You are mindful of him, the son of man that You care for him? You made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor. You made him ruler over the works of Your hands; you put everything under his feet: all flocks and herds, and the beasts of the field, the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas. O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is Your name in all the earth!
We have incredible worth, not because of what we do, but because of Who made us. But the world does not see it that way. They believe in a far fetched evolution process. It’s no wonder people question their value. It is hard to feel special when you think you were created by random processes involving primordial soup. You can’t get too excited about your existence when you are taught you are here by completely unplanned, unreasoned luck.
How we approach life is largely determined by this foundational question…Where did we come from? If you think that you just appeared and are some sort of a chemical accident, then you will always battle with the question of worth. But if you can resolve in your life that the Bible is truth and that you were hand-crafted by the Creator God, then you have a solid foundation on which to build from. That is why the Bible is the foundation on which we first must start.
When a master painter that is world renown paints a picture, the value is mostly determined by who painted it, not what the painting is of. In the same way, our worth and value is not found in what we are or are not. It is found in Who created us. God took the time to create and shape each one of us into a special and unique being. We are God’s hand-crafted masterpieces, not a galactic soup accident!
One of my hobbies is to paint and look at handmade artwork. I appreciate the hard work it takes an artist to create their amazing paintings with great detail. But, I have to tell you, I have seen some pretty ugly paintings (in my opinion) that were considered priceless, because the creator of the painting was so famous. Looking at the painting objectively, I may have not understood how it could be considered so valuable, but that is the point isn’t it? On it’s own, it may not be worth much, but because the painter has proven himself to be an amazing artist, the painting is extremely valuable. The painting’s worth is found in who painted it, not in what the picture is of.
At times, we can have some pretty ugly things in our lives. This is why it is vital for us to grasp the artist-artwork concept. We must always remember that our value is not determined by our ability to be great, our value is determined by the ability of our great God.
It is not about who you are but Who’s you are that matters.
As believers, we should never question our worth and value. Our worth has nothing to do with us, it has everything to do with the One Who created us. We are an original painting made by the hand of God, and that makes us of significant worth!
