The other day my daughter asked me, “Daddy, do some people not have any talents?”
I quickly answered, “Everyone has talents.”
She then responded, “Yeah, but, some people might not have any talents, right?”
I said, “Baby, God has given everyone talents…everyone.”
She asked again, “I know, but there has to be some people without talents, right?”
I responded again, “EVERYONE has talents, besides with God all things are POSSIBLE, so anyone can have talents!”
She quickly said, “So it’s POSSIBLE than someone may not have talents then, right?”
I didn’t know how to respond. The truth is we all question our talents and gifts. Sometimes, like my daughter, we just can’t believe that we have what it takes to do all that God has for us. We keep saying, “Yeah, but…” We believe other people are gifted, but when it comes to ourselves we tend to overlook our greatness. We see everyone else’s gifts and talents at work, but we can easily fail to see ours.
This plagues everyone, especially when you feel that God has put a vision in your heart. Notice that we never question our abilities until we are faced with something that is bigger than what we have ever done. No one questions their talents to do things they have accomplished, it’s always when we are up against something that we have never done. There is a reason for this…the reason is that our fear always rises up whenever God wants us to go to a new level. You may have heard the old saying, “For every new level, there is a new devil.” That devil that we face, comes in the form of questioning our ability. The truth is, if we were never questioning if we have what it takes we probably aren’t growing and going anywhere of significance. Whenever God calls us to push beyond where we are, it causes our self limiting beliefs to rev up. Don’t feel bad about questioning your ability, just learn how to break through it.
Here are some ways we can break through our limiting beliefs..
1. Get A New Set Of Beliefs
Quit allowing yourself to adopt fear and doubt. Don’t subscribe to it’s channel. Your set of beliefs should be grounded in God’s promises not your fear. Fear will always tell you that you can’t do it, and you don’t have what it takes. It always tries to suppress your purpose, because fear comes from the enemy, not God. Get a new set of beliefs by basing them ALL on God’s word and His promises.
2. Stop Speaking Negatively
Quit allowing yourself to say things like,
- “I can’t do that.”
- “I don’t have any talents.”
- “I’ll never have enough _______ to do that.”
- “I am to shy.”
- “No one will listen to me.”
- “I am not that outgoing.”
Notice how all those statements are about YOU. It is not about you, it is about God’s power working through you. Quit being friends with negativity and allowing it to steal your future. Speak life and faith-filled words at all times.
3. Just Go
Quit stalling and just step out and go. Unless God has specifically told you to not do something or to wait, step out and go. God is not going to punish you for having faith and going. Besides, 2/3rds of God’s name is GO (GO-d). He is a God of movement and action, that is why the book of ACTS is called the book of Acts and not the book of Laziness. What is the worst than can happen when you step out in faith and trust in God? He will be there for you, quit fearing the worst and just go when God is calling you to go. Life is too short to sit around in fear, doubt, and unbelief. Get going and takes small steps if you have to, but do something. The more you step out, the more you will overcome self-limiting beliefs.
