Psalm 37:4 “Delight yourself in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart.”
What a great promise we have from God. This is a verse that many people misunderstand and sometimes completely forget to hold on to. Like a slippery noodle sliding of the fork, we lose the power of this statement. So let’s break it down…
1. Delight Yourself
This means it is our responsibility to be delighted. It is not chance, it is not happenstance, it is not luck that makes us delighted…it is our choice. Too many times we wait for circumstances to determine our happiness rather than making the choice to be happy. So how do you make that choice? Think about the word DELIGHT…the root word here is…light and the prefix DE meaning “of,” so to DELIGHT means to be of lightness. What does this mean? It means we need to carry a light load through life. To be of a light hearted and light burdened nature. The more you carry stress, unforgiveness, anxiety, fear, etc… the heavier your load will be…and thus…the less delighted you will find yourself.
2. In The Lord
We can only be delighted when we are living in the Lord. Not just for Him, but in Him. There is a big difference between living FOR God and living IN God. For God is out of duty, in God is out of relationship. When we are partnered with God we are entwined together. The only way we will ever experience the power of God in our lives is to live from His promise not for it. This means we have to stand in a place of faith and assurance on His promises, not wavering with doubt and unbelief. It is only in this place that we find ourselves IN THE LORD.
3. And He
God is the One who determines our destiny. He is the One who holds the power, not us. We choose to live in His power, but it is He who grants it to us. We must understand that when we live IN Him it says…”AND HE…” the and is the response from God to us. When we do our part and take a step of faith He steps into our situations. It is sowing and reaping nature of God’s heart. When we sow our faith we reap the reward of His power in our situations and destiny.
4. Will Give You
God WILL give you…not He might…not hopefully…HE WILL GIVE YOU. God is a rewarder of those who seek Him. He loves to bless and pour out His goodness. You can trust that God WILL do that which He said He will do. And look out for supernatural favor from God when this happens. When you least expect it, He will give you exactly what you need. You will not have to do it alone, He will literally be the ONE who gives all things to you. Even if you feel inadequate to live out your dreams and destiny it is God who GIVES us the ability to do it.
5. The Desires
He gives us the DESIRES. This means you can trust what your desires are…are what His desires are. Bill Johnson wrote this, “Many believers discount their desires, automatically trying to get rid of everything they want in order to prove their surrender to God. Their selfless approach overshoots the will of God and actually denies the fact that God is the Father of the dreams and abilities within them.” It may sound selfless to deny your desires, but learn to embrace them for the glory of God. Stop discounting your dreams and desires to make a difference doing what you feel you were created to do. Stop thinking that to serve God it must be something you don’t want to do. Your desires are there for a reason.
6. Of Your Heart
Check this out the Bible says the desires of YOUR heart. God planted you with a certain makeup, a spiritual imprint that only you have. He will literally give you desires that you and only you contain. Don’t think that you were overlooked, under distributed, or missed out on fantastic gifts from God. No matter who you are or where you came from, you have been packed with desires that only you possess. It’s time to embrace your uniqueness and understand that you have something to offer in your heart. You are a one-of-a-kind masterpiece that has a significant destiny to fulfill.
