The most important place you can talk to yourself is wherever you woke up. The first moments of what you say to yourself when you open your eyes can set the narrative for your entire day. This is why it is vital to start your day off with a healthy dialogue of positivity and hope.
Remember the old Saturday Night Live sketch Daily Affirmations with Stuart Smalley? Talk show host, Stuart Smalley, would wake up every morning and confidently say, “I’m good enough, I’m smart enough, and doggone it, people like me.” Though this was a satirical self-help show, the science proves how powerful these statements can help our self-worth. In an article in Psychology Today, Dr. Ronald Alexander wrote,
“An affirmation can work, because it has the ability to program your mind into believing the stated concept. This is because the mind doesn’t know the difference between what is real or fantasy. When you watch a movie, and you start to laugh or cry, your mind is empathizing with the characters on the screen even though it is only Hollywood magic.”
Consequently, the worst thing you can do is to start your day off is with negativity. The moment you start narrating complaints about your weight, your looks, your fears, your day, etc. is the moment you welcome defeat. Starting your day off right will give you the strength and mindset you will need to accomplish all that is before you. Instead of allowing circumstances to determine what happens to us in the morning, we need to be intentional about starting it the way we want.
Remember, Proverbs 18:21 says that death and life are in the power of the tongue. Our words can build up our day or tear it down before it even begins. How do you speak to yourself in the morning? What are the words you say to yourself when you look in the mirror? I guarantee you that whatever you say is going to affect your day tremendously.
Take a 10-Day Tongue Challenge. Make it a point to speak life over yourself for 10 days straight every morning and see what begins to happen.
