I am officially coining a concept called the beit principle. The beit principle says: If you want to become something then be it now. I know…super deep combination of be & it…beit. We have heard the statement “Fake it ’till you make it.” But what about…
“Be it ’till you become it.”
You see, if you really want to become something then you need to simply start acting like it now in order to become it later. You don’t wake up one day and become who you’ve always wanted to be. Rather, you wake up one day and simply start being who you’ve always wanted to be so you’ll eventually become who you’ve always wanted to be. Zig Ziglar said, “Before a person can achieve the kind of life he wants, he must think, act, talk, and conduct himself in all of his affairs as would the person he wishes to become.” The only sure way to become the person you are capable of is to follow the beit principle.
Here are some pointers to get you living out the beit principle…
1) Think like the person you want to become
Proverbs 23:7 (NKJV)
“For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.”
To become the best version of yourself you need to start thinking that way. Your thoughts dictate your actions. The Bible says that when we are in Christ we are a new creation…the old things have passed away. In order for us to become a new person we have to let the old things pass away…that includes old ways of thinking. Stop thinking the worst and start thinking the best. Keep your mind on things above, that are praiseworthy, noble, pure, lovely, right, etc… The battle for your identity starts in your mind. You will never become all you are capable of becoming if you don’t believe you can. Simply start thinking what would the best version of myself do in this situation…then do it.
2) Talk like the person you want to become
Our words have creative life giving power. The way you talk shapes the things you experience. Words are powerful. If I could spend a day with you I would probably be able to tell where your life is going based on the way you talk about yourself, others, and the situations you are in. Words display what is in our heart.
Luke 6:45 (NIV)
A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.
Changing the way you talk can literally change the person you become. When you discipline yourself to guard your mouth there will come a time when you won’t have to because it will be natural for you to use your words with power and authority for good.
3) Act like the person you want to become
It may feel weird at first, but just start to be it till you become it. Act like the person you want to be by embodying the characteristics of that person.
- How would the best version of yourself act when he/she is in a group?
- How would the best version of yourself act when someone hurt them?
- What would the best version of yourself do throughout the day?
- How would the best version of yourself spend their time?
- What habits would the best version of yourself have?
Ask yourself these questions and some. When I started public speaking I would always think about a mentor of mine (that was a great communicator) during my message preparation. I would envision how my mentor would say what I wanted to say, then I would emulate it. The best way to become something is to simply follow the beit principle…just be it and you’ll eventually become it! Remember…
