The Miracle In The Manger: Part 3 – The Gift of Presence

If you have not read Part 1 & Part 2 do so now.

The Gift of Presence – A Relationship, Not a Ritual

More Than a Tradition

The days leading up to Christmas can feel like a blur of activity—gifts to buy, parties to attend, and traditions to uphold. But when we strip away the busyness, what remains at the heart of this season? The birth of Jesus isn’t just a story to be celebrated once a year—it’s an invitation into relationship. The manger scene points to something deeper: Christmas isn’t about rituals or routines. It’s about being present—with God and with each other.

God with Us: The Miracle of Presence

When John 1:14 tells us, “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us,” it isn’t just announcing a miraculous event—it’s revealing the very heart of God. The Creator of the universe didn’t stay distant. He stepped into human history to be with us. Jesus’s birth tells us that God desires more than obedience or religious observance—He desires relationship.

Life with Christ isn’t a list of rules or transactions. It’s about knowing Him, walking with Him, and experiencing His love. As Matthew 22:37-39 reminds us, the greatest commandment is to love God with all our heart, soul, and mind—and to love our neighbor as ourselves. At its core, Christmas is a celebration of God’s presence with us and an opportunity to reflect that same love to others.

From Ritual to Relationship

Throughout history, people have often placed more value on rituals than relationships. Even during Jesus’s time, the religious leaders were so focused on following the rules that they missed the heart behind them. But Jesus came to change that. He shifted the focus from religious performance to personal connection, saying: “I am the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6).

In the same way, Christmas invites us to move beyond mere traditions—though they may be meaningful—and lean into what truly matters: Who we have, not what we have. It’s not about the gifts under the tree but the relationships we cultivate—with God and with the people in our lives.

Reflection Moment: Are You Fully Present?

This time of year, it’s easy to get caught up in the “what”—the gifts, the decorations, the plans. But Christmas is about who we’re with. The most meaningful moments come when we are fully present, just as God became fully present with us through Jesus.

Ask yourself:

  • Are there ways I’ve been more focused on rituals than on relationships?
  • How can I slow down and be more present with God and the people around me?

Christmas Is About Who, Not What

The nativity scene teaches us that life isn’t about accumulating things—it’s about relationship. Jesus’s birth wasn’t about rituals or grand ceremonies. It was about God drawing near to us, inviting us into relationship with Him. And just as He came to be with us, we are called to be present with those around us.

This Christmas, let’s remember that the most important thing isn’t the “what” but the “who.” Be present with God. Be present with family and friends. And above all, reflect the love of Christ to those in your life.

Your Weekly Challenge:

As you gather with loved ones this Christmas, take time to pause and reflect on the miracle of God’s presence. Read the story of Jesus’s birth (Luke 2:1-20) together and thank God for the gift of His love. Let this be a Christmas marked by connection—with God and with the people He’s placed in your life.

Final Thought:

The beauty of Christmas is found not in things but in the people we love—and in the Savior who loves us. Let’s carry that truth with us not just on Christmas Day but throughout the year, living lives that reflect the heart of Jesus.

Thank you for journeying with us through this series! May the joy, peace, and presence of Christ fill your heart this Christmas season and beyond.
