I couldn’t resist the jokes–I had to share. So, let’s talk about the Bible. It is truly our life-source as followers of Christ, yet few people, including myself at times, treat it as an extracurricular, rather than a necessity. We too easily forget the power of God’s Word. Remember, the Bible is the root source of power. Evangelist F.F. Bosworth said, “Most Christians feed their bodies three hot meals a day, their spirits one cold snack a week, and they wonder why they are so weak in faith.”
Hebrews 4:12 (NIV)For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.
We must never forget that the Bible is alive. It’s not just a book of stories and poetry; it’s a book of purpose and power. It literally feeds us who we need to be and what we need to do. It’s our compass in the wilderness of life. If we are going to be successful in life we have to know and live out the Word of God. It’s full of everything we need. We can’t fulfill our potential without having a consistent feeding of wisdom from God’s Word. Just like you can’t stop feeding your physical body food and expect to go on living, you can’t stop feeding yourself a healthy portion of The Word and expect to live victoriously.
Your consumption of God’s Word will determine your spiritual capacity. The more we get into the Word of God, the more it gets into us, empowering our decisions. You can’t fully know God without knowing His Word. This doesn’t mean you have to be a scholar to know Him, just that you need an understanding of His ways. The Bible shows us His heart.
John 1:1 (NIV)In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
My challenge to all of us is to discipline ourselves to get a healthy dose of God’s Word as often as we can. The more you open yourself up to God’s wisdom, the more direction you have to follow His paths. Don’t starve yourself from your life-source. If you want a word from God, you have to get into the Word of God. Don’t say God has been silent when your Bible has been closed.
