Part 1: The Supernatural Foundation of Christianity
When we think about Christianity, one of the key aspects that sets it apart from other world religions is the concept of supernatural intervention by God. While many religions are focused on man’s efforts to reach God or attain a better state of being, Christianity presents a reverse narrative—one where God reaches down to us. This divine intervention is not only central to our faith but also a defining factor of what makes Christianity unique.
A Living, Active God
In many religions, the gods worshipped are distant, impersonal, or even dead. Their followers are left to honor mere ideas, concepts, or philosophies. However, Christianity is distinct in that it is centered on a living, active God who is deeply involved in our daily lives. This God intervenes, guides, and sustains His people through a relationship that is anything but passive. By its very nature, Christianity demands an acknowledgment and embrace of the supernatural because our faith hinges on the belief that God is alive and actively working in our world.
Redefining the Supernatural
The term “supernatural” often carries feelings of mysticism, fear, or even something that is beyond comprehension. We might associate the supernatural with the bizarre or even scary, thanks to movies and media. However, in a Christian context, the supernatural is not about mysticism but about God’s extraordinary involvement in our ordinary lives. It’s about God taking what is natural—our daily experiences, our logical thinking—and infusing it with His “super,” His divine presence and power.
The supernatural simply merges the natural with God’s superpower, making it supernatural. It’s not something to be feared but something to be embraced. When we understand that the supernatural is God’s way of interacting with His creation, we begin to see that it is not illogical or mystical but a demonstration of His love and power in our lives.
The “Nones” and the Search for Meaning
In today’s culture, there’s a growing group known as the “nones”—people who claim no religious affiliation. Interestingly, atheism is on the decline, but so is traditional religious belief. The “nones” represent a group of individuals searching for meaning but unsure where to find it. They’re skeptical of organized religion, yet they cannot fully embrace atheism because it offers little hope or purpose.
Many of these individuals are aware of what we might call the “X factor” in life—a recognition that there’s something more out there, something unexplainable. Whether it’s the complexity of the human body or the mysteries of the universe, they acknowledge that there’s an element of life that science and logic cannot fully explain. This X factor often points to the supernatural, even if they don’t fully understand or accept it.
As Christians, we are called to embrace the supernatural, not as something strange or otherworldly, but as a natural extension of our faith. Our God is living, active, and involved in our lives, working in ways that often go beyond our understanding. The challenge for us is to move beyond our logical limitations and trust in God, who can do immeasurably more than we can ask or imagine.
In the next post, we’ll explore how we can expect the supernatural in our daily lives and why this expectancy is crucial for experiencing God’s power.
