Where Are You Looking From?

Psalm 121:1-2 (NIV)

1 I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from? 2 My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.

We are to lift our eyes up and focus on the Lord. The question we have to ask ourselves is, “Am I looking to God first when situations come up in my life?” Do we turn to Him immediately?

Years ago, I heard a great statement: “Your reactions reveal more about you than your actions.” If you really want to know if you are trusting God, when you are faced with something good or bad, see if He is your first thought. Do you praise Him for both the blessings and the pain? Is your reaction to life’s challenges one of faith in God’s promises? Our immediate reactions display the condition of our heart.

When we look to God, He gives us His perspective on the situation. Elevated to His vantage point, we can see things about our circumstances that we wouldn’t otherwise be able to see. If you were to look ahead from where you stand now, your view would be blocked by various obstacles in front of you (i.e. trees, buildings, etc…). However, if you were to climb up a tree, you would have a bird’s eye view above those obstacles. You would have a clearer perspective of the path ahead. Spiritually, we gain perspective by seeing life through the eyes of Christ. Our fears and doubts are eradicated when we see things as God sees them. As He says in the following passage, His ways are higher than ours, but we can ask for wisdom to see things as He does and to walk by faith in that knowledge.

Isaiah 55:9 (NIV)

As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.

God’s ways are higher than our ways, and that is why He sometimes calls us to do things we don’t always understand. We can only see the mountains and the valleys before us, but God sees the whole landscape. This is why we must be faithful to walk in the ways God has laid out for us, even when it looks impossible. Ask for His perspective and trust that He is faithful. When your faith is grounded in Christ, you can make godly choices and walk in them, because He is leading along the way.

So where are you looking from today? If you are looking from God’s perspective, then nothing you are facing is hopeless or impossible. Let your faith rise and you raise your eyes to God’s vantage point. Trust Him to do the impossible.
