We overestimate what we don’t have and underestimate what we do have. It’s a scarcity mindset that hijacks our success.
Most people are chasing what they don’t have, but in doing so, they fail to utilize what they do have. We tend to always live with a “the grass is greener on the other side” mentality that wrecks our current potential. Rather, we need to embrace the “grass is greener on the other side because they’ve watered and fertilized it” mentality. The grass is only greener because someone took the time to cultivate it. You too can have an amazing yard if you fully invest yourself into where you are. Greatness doesn’t exist out there somewhere, it exists within you.
So how do we cultivate our yard to have amazing green grass? I am glad you asked…let me share some thoughts:
1) Use What You’ve Got
Be resourceful. Did you get that? I didn’t say get the most perfect resources…I said be resourceful. This means you figure out a way to use what is around you to its fullest potential. Every day you are surrounded by opportunities to do what you want to do. When you reach into your skills, gifts, strengths, personality, etc… you will find everything you need to make a difference. The biggest lie of the enemy is to deceive you from seeing your potential. If you don’t see what you’ve got you’ll miss what you can do. Stop saying you don’t have what you need and start reaching within to use what you’ve already got.
Hebrews 13:20-21 (NIV)
20 Now may the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep,21 equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.
2) Be Patiently Persistent
If you are going to cultivate your life it WILL take patience. The patience to play the long-game of life. Remember, life is not a short sprint, it’s a marathon filled with hurdles. Keep moving forward even if it’s moving slowly. I call it being patiently persistent, meaning be patient but keep taking steps towards your dreams and potential. It’s like the advice I once heard, “You can easily become an overnight success after 20 years of hard work.” Will it take 20 years, I don’t know, but I do know it will take time. Green grass doesn’t pop up overnight, it’s takes fertilizing and watering consistently over time. Don’t give up on your dreams, just be in it for the long-haul.
Galatians 6:9 (NIV)
9 Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.
3) Fully Rely On God
Be a spiritual FROG…one who is Fully Relying On God in all you do. He is in the business of supernatural favor and blessing. You do what you can and God will do what you can’t. Let your faith arise and trust God’s timing and direction for your life. The Apostle Paul understood this reliance on God’s power.
1 Corinthians 3:7 (NIV)
So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow.
Did you get that? God is the only one who makes things grow. Submit to Him and He will direct your paths. He will give you what you need. He will do greater things than you can imagine. Every day you wake up make sure you call on His name and His power to fill your life. Fight the good fight and keep running the race with all you’ve got. God will be faithful as He always is!
