Did you know you can remind God of His promises?
This idea blew my mind years ago when I learned about it. There is this interesting passage in Isaiah, check it out…
Isaiah 62:6-7 (ESV)
On your walls, O Jerusalem, I have set watchmen; all the day and all the night they shall never be silent. You who put the Lord in remembrance, take no rest, 7 and give him no rest until he establishes Jerusalem and makes it a praise in the earth.
It says, “you who put the Lord in remembrance, take no rest…” What a challenge for us! We are able to hold onto the promises of God and even declare those back to Him. This reminded me of the parable Jesus taught about called the Persistent Widow. Let’s read this…
Luke 18:1-8 (NIV)
18 Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up. 2 He said: “In a certain town there was a judge who neither feared God nor cared what people thought. 3 And there was a widow in that town who kept coming to him with the plea, ‘Grant me justice against my adversary.’
4 “For some time he refused. But finally he said to himself, ‘Even though I don’t fear God or care what people think, 5 yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice, so that she won’t eventually come and attack me!’”
6 And the Lord said, “Listen to what the unjust judge says. 7 And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? 8 I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?”
We are called to persist with our faith and stand on God’s promises time and time again. When I first learned about all this, I thought that was kind of prideful or arrogant to “put God in remembrance.” But God began to reveal to me that it isn’t about reminding Him as though He forgets, rather it’s about us being steadfast in our faith. We don’t remind God because He doesn’t care or is forgetful, we remind God to show our persistent belief in His Word. It’s not really about Him as much as it’s about us getting in alignment with Him.
I want to challenge all of us to develop this type of persistent faith that stands strong even in the midst of the storms. Even though it may not seem as though things are turning out well, God wants us to be guided by our faith.
2 Corinthians 5:7 (NIV)
For we live by faith not by sight.
So whatever you are going through, remind God of His promises and His Word. Not out of arrogance or control, but out of unshakable faith in His Word.
