Now that we are in February I think it is safe to say that the majority of people who signed up for their local gym to work out are on the couch doing what they have always done…nothing. All the fitness motivation has probably worn off and the drive to persevere has vanished. I don’t mean to be skeptical, but we all know it’s the truth. Why? Because most people make excuses rather than results. They wish rather than work, and would rather play than plan. Unfortunately, many of us carry this same type of thinking into our spiritual lives. Jesus warned us about this…
Luke 9:62
62 Jesus replied, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”
Notice Jesus said, “FIT for the Kingdom.” What does being fit mean? What comes to your mind when you think of being fit? Here are a few I think of…
- Strong
- Put Together
- Healthy
- Organized
- Powerful
Here are some things I certainly don’t think of when I hear the word “fit”…
- Lazy
- Disorganized
- Tired
- Weak
- Falling Apart
Interesting that Jesus said people who put their hand to the plow then look back are not fit for the Kingdom. These are people who started, desired, and were possibly motivated to work and step out for God, but for some reason gave up and looked back. They took their hand off the plow and looked back at what? Possibly their old life, maybe their comfort, maybe their sense of security, whatever it was they weren’t looking forward into the future anymore. They stopped forging ahead in what God had for them and looked back at what used to be.
When our eyes are looking in the past we can’t see what is ahead in our future. If we constantly stare out the rearview mirror of life we are not going to see the road ahead of us. Being FIT for the Kingdom is about staying focused on the road head of us, not behind us. You can’t change the past, so quit living there. Being fit is about taking advantage of the here and now and making it the best it can be. It is about making the right choices in the moment that will lead us to the destiny God has for us. We have to start getting fit for the Kingdom NOW and stop making excuses for ourselves. You are reading this because it is your time to get FIT for your future. Stop procrastinating, stop being indecisive, stop being lazy, stop talking about what you are going to do…AND DO IT! It is like the old saying, “When was the best time to plant a tree? 20 years ago. When is the next best time? NOW!”
Start working out your faith and get fit for the Kingdom. Read your Bible, get serving others, get your finances in order, start speaking life over yourself, get control over your physical body, punch fear in the face and kick sin out the door. This is your year to be FIT FOR THE KINGDOM and to see God do supernatural things in your life…GET READY!
